Feeling stuck? You Need to Change Your Environment.

The Porsche was nice.
But…
It turned out, in the grand scheme, it meant absolutely nothing.
I bought it by default.
The Land Rover wouldn’t fit in the garage at the new house, so I needed something smaller.
The 911 seemed to fit the bill.
Plus, as a bit of a petrolhead, I didn’t mind a bit of noise under my right foot.
I’d drive it to the aeroclub, where I’d jump in G-WINS and fly us off to France.
I had a great business, a cheeky sports car, and a plane that took us on epic adventures.
Sounds great, right…
So why was I still unhappy?
Because I no longer wanted to be where I was.
Jersey is a beautiful island, but I’d outgrown it. And as every day passed, I became more unsettled.
No matter what I had or did, the car, the plane, the first-class flights to Australia weren’t doing it.
Because you’ll hear me say this time and again:
“Environment trumps will every time.”
What does that mean?
No matter how hard you try to change something, if the place you’re at isn’t right, you’re on a hiding to nothing.
Your environment can be:
- The place you live
- Your people
- Your job
On face value, it looked like I had everything.
But the truth was that I was merely papering over the cracks with very expensive glue.
Jules’s environment was her job. The stress of it was literally killing her.
Her doctor said, “If something doesn’t change, you’re on for a stroke or heart attack.”
And no amount of pounds sterling can help with that.
So that’s when we did it.
We sold all of the expensive toys, packed up our lives into six suitcases, and headed south.
The only commitment we had was an Airbnb for a month.
And here we are, more than four years later.
Living in shorts and flip-flops, and stoating around in our trusty ‘Disco’.
No Porsche, no plane, just a beautifully simple life with a business running on autopilot.
Because we changed our environment.
